What is Hair Split Ends? – This occurs when the hair cuticle becomes physically damaged, resulting in unravelling of the cortex fibres of each strand. It normally occurs at the tips of the hair strand, but sometimes can occur further up the shaft, which is much more unsightly. Split hair appears dry, brittle and easily tangles.
Hair Split Ends Causes – Most commonly a result of improper hair-care and often occurs because of several factors. Failure to have a regular cut, grooming too much (especially with poor quality or tangled combs and brushes), over-use of shampoos, perms, colour treatments, insufficent conditioning, excessive heat styling and harsh use of rollers, hair pins and hair accessories.
Hair Split Ends Advice – A split hair cannot be mended and when it occurs the splitting can travel from the ends and go all the way up the hair shaft to the root, which really makes the hair appear scruffy. Once split ends have been discovered, the best action is to have a hair cut to remove the damaged hair. If the the splits have occurred further up the hair shaft, then first thing to do is reduce the frequency of shampooing as this can speed up the process. In addition, excess heat on the hair should be avoided. The hair should be well conditioned with special products that are designed to seal the split, so that it stops from splitting any further.
Hair Split Ends Treatments
These are special conditioners and serums that are designed to provide a temporary solution to split ends and breaking hair. They work by sealing the split, which stops it getting worse and travelling up the entire shaft of the hair. They also have a coating effect which retains the moisture and makes the hair shaft smoother, so grooming is easier and less destructive.
It is important to realise that split ends are permanent and that the only way to remove them is to have a hair cut. This is obviously not practical if the splits are half way up the hair and you still want to keep it long. A split-end treatment is especially useful in this case.
