This musical version of The Gift of the Magi â” adapted from O. Henryâs classic story of
love and generosity â” was written by APT Core Company member James DeVita, with
original music by Josh Schmidt. DeVita will also direct. The show features Core
Company members Tracy Michelle Arnold as Della and Brian Mani as O. Henry, and
APT favorite (and Ms. Arnoldâs real-life husband) Marcus Truschinski as Jim. The Gift of
the Magi will premiere in APTâs 200-seat, indoor Touchstone Theatre on November 26,
2010, and close December 19, 2010 after 26 performances.
According to playwright James DeVita, “APT is an ideal fit for The Gift of the Magi because of their shared simplicity and honesty. He calls it âa simple holiday show based on the storyâ¦and just two musicians–a cello and viola.” He went on to say â”This is a great story celebrating some of the very simple truths which we all know, but we often forget in the bustle of life. A good story helps to remind us of what we already know in our heartsâ¦Jim and Della’s life is all about how much they can do with how little, and when in doubt they too fall back upon the simple truth they knowâ”that they have each other.”

Jim and his wife Della are very much in love, but can barely afford their one-room apartment due to a recent decrease in Jimâs salary. As a Christmas gift, Della scrapes together pennies to buy Jim a fob for his prized pocket watch given to him by his grandfather. When her savings doesnât cover the cost of the fob, she cuts off and sells her long, beautiful hair cut to make up the extra. Meanwhile, Jim decides to sell his watch to buy Della a beautiful set of tortoiseshell combs for her lovely hair. Although each is disappointed to find the gift they chose rendered useless, in the end they are even more pleased with the gift they received, because it represents their love for one another. Featuring original songs written by James DeVita and Josh Schmidt, and performed by Tracy Michelle Arnold, Brian Mani and Marcus Truschinski.

ABOUT AMERICAN PLAYERS THEATRE
American Players Theatre is located at 5950 Golf Course Road, Spring Green, Wis., on 110 acres of hilly woods and meadows above the Wisconsin River, 40 miles west of Madison. The APT amphitheater is built within a natural hollow atop an oak-wooded hill. Under the dome of sky, 1148 comfortably cushioned seats encircle three sides of the stage.
The natural beauty of the great outdoors is an integral part of the APT summer experience. Picnicking in the woods is popular before and between shows. Patrons may bring their own picnic or purchase gourmet picnic dinners provided by the Hubbard Avenue Diner in Middleton, Wis. Picnics are made fresh daily and delivered to the theater. There are hiking trails and two graceful walking paths leading up the hill to the theater. A shuttle bus is also available. 2010 brings APTâs first winter show, The Gift of the Magi, a world-premiere musical written by James DeVita.
The theaterâs mission is to bring the classics to life for as wide and diverse an audience as possible, making great plays accessible and understandable through skilled and reverent presentation. The Wall Street Journalâs Terry Teachout recently called APT â”â¦one of Americaâs top classical companies.” Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune raved, â”â¦the current level of classical work here is without self-evident Midwestern peer” and Damien Jacques, writing for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel called APT â”â¦arguably the best classical stage company in the U.S.”
