Long hair
This was taken on the west side of Broadway on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, between 81st and 80th Street — pretty much in front of Zabar’s. I had been walking along behind this woman for a block or two, wondering if she would turn around so I could take a picture of her face. But then it dawned on me — duh! — that no matter how beautiful she might be, her face couldn’t possibly be as interesting as her braided hair, which reached almost to her ankles…

It was also published as an illustration in a July 2009 BellaSugar blog article titled "Extreme Beauty: 16 Supersized Hairstyles." And it was published on a Wikimedia page titled File: Long braid. And it was published as an illustration in a Sep 2009 Squidoo blog titled "The Way Of The Hair: A Visual History of Hairstyles."
Note: on Aug 7, 2009 I uploaded a slightly edited version of this photo; I used Apple’s "Aperture" program to eliminate hot spots and cold spots, and also decreased the shadows on the woman’s back and jeans, to better highlight her long braided hair. Most people probably won’t notice the difference — but since this is (as of Aug 2009) the third most-often viewed image in my Flickr collection, I felt I should make it as good as possible…

**********************
This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan — between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
I don’t like to intrude on people’s privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they’re still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what’s right in front of me.
I’ve also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting — literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I’ve learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture … after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it’s pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.
For the most part, I’ve deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don’t want to be photographed, and I don’t want to feel like I’m taking advantage of them. I’m still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We’ll see how it goes …
The only other thing I’ve noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They’re probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I’ve photographed … but there was just nothing memorable about them.

Well this is it. Enjoy. I’m personally not a fan of the V-shaped hair. That’s when you have a “V” shape when you gather all your hair to the back. In this video, I’ll show you how to get a natural straight hemline without making it look too blunt. *PLEASE NOTE I cut/layer my hair by dividing horizontal chunks of hair because I have less hair. This way, I achieve lots of layers without losing volume. If you have a LOT of hair, section the hair you’re going to layer vertically and cut it at an angle doing down. I’m so sorry I forget to mention this in the video! Good luck! DISCLAIMER: I am no pro! Please don’t hold me responsible if you mess up …

Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Women with very long hair, and we’d love to have this added to the group!
I say chop off the braid and play jump rope with it
And I say let the braid grow!
And I say pixie cut!
I wonder if anyone has asked her what she thinks; I certainly didn’t!
Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Just walking, and we’d love to have this added to the group!
Your Walking-picture is really interesting! Gratulations!
chop it & progress about 35-40 years.
carzy!!!!!
Thanks Ed. I think some of the previous comments are cruel & unkind. Whilst almost nothing is known about this lady, she has presumably chosen over the past (+/-) 15 years not to have her hair cut and the world is a more beautiful place for it.
The thought occurs to me of a photograph of this lady’s hair with her plait unbraided, where it would be even longer than it appears in the photograph. Ed – if you were ever to see this lady again, perhaps you could encourage her to make a visit to a photographic studio for that purpose??

That’s an interesting idea, and I’ll certainly try to ask her if I ever see her again. However, it has been almost a year since I took that photograph — and while I don’t pass by that spot very often (I live almost a mile further north, which covers a lot of territory in a crowded city like New York), I would have expected to see her somewhere in the neighborhood if she actually lived around here. It’s quite possible that she was a visitor or tourist, and will never return to NYC at all …

This shot was on explore! Congrats!
Lovely capture.
Thanks!
imagine this hair …UN-BRAIDED!!!!!!!!!!
it might look good…………….but a trim of the bottom bits might suffice, say bottom 6 inches or so
see add note thing.
cheers
billzben,
Thanks for the notes and suggestions. If I have time, I’ll try cropping the right side of the photo; I had deliberately left that part of the picture in there to provide some "context," so the viewer had some sense of where she was walking…

beautiful photo
Thanks!
Ewww D: People don’t realize, that the hair on the bottom, was on the top like however many weeks or so ago D: I get cuts, almost biweekly.
Well, I have no idea how often this woman got her hair cut…
Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Cute & sexy in denim ! , and we’d love to have this added to the group!
Ed, my question is: How do you find out what blogs this has appeared in? Flickr stats doesn’t help: "Unknown source", etc. I often wonder, for example, why suddenly a year old photo of mine will have 100-plus views in a day! You seem to know how to unlock the mystery!
BTW, put me firmly in the camp of those who admire this woman’s hair! I don’t know why Miss Nguyen or anyone else would feel the necessity for bi-weekly haircuts!

My website, Flickr ID, Twitter ID, Facebook ID, and various other such things on the Internet are all the same as my surname – "yourdon". So I can use that as the basis for a search, and come up with lots of items that Flickr Stats doesn’t show me explicitly. There’s a great meta-search engine located at www.addictomatic.com that searches through all kinds of blogs and other sources, and I also use the search mechanism at icerocket.com

Thanks for the info!
jeez when a braid gets so ridiculously thin it’s usually a good idea to snip it off at at least the point it starts looking ridiculous!!!
You’re on a mission! haha.
