Leading Hair Loss Website to Urge Boycott of SC Theme Park
Ft. Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) July 27, 2009
HairLoss.com, the leading social network website dedicated to raising public awareness about hair loss issues is calling for officials at Freestyle Music Park in Myrtle Beach, SC, to cease running a popular television ad promoting their Time Machine roller coaster or face a boycott.
“The officials at Freestyle Music Park should be ashamed and embarrassed for not only promoting this cheap, low-level and insulting ad, but then by defending it as ‘fun’,” said Michael Garcia, spokesman for HairLoss.com. “We should be past so-called ‘funny ads’ that are humorous at the expense of people who suffer from a physical disability.”
The television ad shows the 150-foot-tall roller coaster moving so fast that a man loses his hairpiece. The owner of a hair replacement business in South Carolina, Dennis Murphy, first challenged the park’s claim by riding the roller coaster without his very own hairpiece – or hair system – falling off. He then asked, “Why should you have to be harassed or made fun of because you want to do something” about your hair loss?
HairLoss.com, which provides consumer information about hair loss solutions and treatment options, is a social network site that encourages its visitors and members to participate in activism and advocacy to help raise public awareness about the sensitive nature of hair loss issues.
Officials at hairloss.com have lauded Dennis Murphy’s “positive action” to show that the ride is safe for all people who are follically challenged, regardless of whether their hair loss is a result of Cancer treatments, Alopecia or any of the many other diseases and hair loss conditions that affect tens of millions of people in the United States alone.
“It insults the intelligence of the consumer,” said Garcia. “It is a cruel attack on people who suffer enough in life with their disability through no fault of their own. The last thing they need is an amusement park marketing their thrill ride by getting their cheap thrills making bald people the butt of a joke that appeals to the lowest sensibilities in people.”
Although its management allowed television cameras into the park to cover Murphy’s challenge as he rode the roller coaster, officials have insisted that the ad is meant to be “fun” and vowed to continue running it. HairLoss.com has released a statement calling on Freestyle Music Park to “apologize to hair loss sufferers worldwide and to stop running the offending ad” or face a boycott, urging its website users, members, consumers, hair loss sufferers, and hair loss providers to write the theme park directly to complain about the content of their ad.
“They would never have shown someone’s prosthetic leg or arm falling out of the roller coaster,” stressed Garcia, “and the public shouldn’t tolerate making fun of people who use prosthetic hair in order to feel whole and healthy.”
And what about hair replacement owner Dennis Murphy?
“His hair didn’t just not fall off, ” said Garcia. “His hair looked awesome. It didn’t look like a hairpiece at all. It looked natural. It showed everyone the state of the art of modern hair prosthetics.”
