Basic conditioners are the most commonly used products for day to day hair care. They are applied after washing and left on for a few minutes so that the ingredients can penetrate the newly washed wet hair. They can then be rinsed off with warm water or a rinsing solution. The result is hair that has been coated with a thin film, which smooths down the hair cuticle and makes it shiny and easy to manage.
There was once a time when hair could be kept in good condition from simply washing it 2-3 times per week. Things have changed dramatically since people have started ‘messing’ around with the hair’s natural balance by perming, colouring and heat-styling it. They also bombard it with dozens of different gels, mousses and hairsprays.
Modern living also puts extra demands on the hair. Working in polluted environments, exposure to cigarette smoke and car exhaust fumes can all affect the condition and look of the hair. All of these things encourage lifting of the hair cuticles, which allow moisture to escape, making the hair dry, lack lustre and difficult to brush.
If left, hair becomes more brittle and splits or even breaks. Today, many of us therefore require additional care for our hair, which basically means using a conditioner after it has been washed.
Conditioners effectively moisturise and coat the hair follicles helping to retain moisture and shine to the hair. The confusing thing is that there are many types available. Hence, it makes sense to know about the various options available when conditioning the hair.
